Inclusivity PolicyThe decision to include children with special needs at Bridge House means that the school gives meaning to the words 'engage wholeheartedly with society' and 'broaden access to the school.' (School vision and values statements)
If we are to be true to these statements, then we need to be truly open and have the same entrance requirements for special needs learners as we do for every other child. We do however have to ask a number of questions with regard to the child and how he or she will cope in the school environment.
For example:
Will the child benefit from being at Bridge House?
Can Bridge House as a school cope with the child and meet the expectations of those parents? (The expectations of the parents of special needs children are obviously discussed and agreed to)
Will the presence of the child at Bridge House be to the detriment of any other child at the school? Can this be managed or not.
With any child who enrols at the school, testing or assessment may be required to help the school to determine whether this is the right environment for that particular child.
Each case is dealt with individually.
Progress to date
Bridge House has successfully enrolled special needs children who are now a part of the Bridge House family in the Prep School. We look forward to seeing this policy being implemented throughout the school in the near future. The growth in understanding and tolerance which has resulted has been brilliant to witness and has added another unique facet to our school.
