Prep Music
Music Education at Bridge House functions as a component of the Learning Area Arts and Culture which includes the other components, Art and Drama. As such, opportunity is created for specialist tuition and learning in separate contexts as well as integrated learning with other Learning Areas. Several integrated projects are run during the year in the Senior Primary where three or more learning areas and their components collaborate around a central theme, each developing different aspects of a theme to create a whole. Learning is thus extended and enriched. Themes have included: District Six, Mythology, The Music Industry and others.
Music Education as an entity offers the children a broad curriculum which includes immediate, local and national music and dances as well as world music where it correlates with the general curriculum. Emphasis is on practical music making and includes: singing, Orff and marimbas, African drumming and percussion, rhythmic movement and dance (including own choreography). Concepts of music are taught informally through practical music making. Performance opportunities include Assemblies, special functions, e.g. Founders' Day and the annual Moonlight with Music Education Concert. The aim is to develop musicianship while also ensuring many opportunities for self-growth, self esteem and exposure to the diversity of music and dance in South Africa and further afield.
