Dressing up for English Orals

We focus on developing independent thinkers and keen, critical readers who are aware of the power and beauty of language. Time is spent on the process of writing, not only the product. A wide variety of genres is explored. We favour a literature-based approach which includes the study of films. Our oral programme aims to encourage confident, effective speakers.

Pupils participate in the English Olympiad, the SACEE Language Challenge, the SA Model United Nations Debating competition amongst others. We work closely with the Art and Drama departments in developing creative projects where children can express themselves through a number of different media.

A cross-curricular approach is part of our focus during the GETC year and we have embarked on the FET with enthusiasm and drive.

We maintain a high standard of academic excellence in the Matric exams. In 2006 and 2008 respectively, two of our students were placed in the top 50 of the English Olympiad.

As part of the extra-curricular progamme, we participate in the Boland schools' debating league. The Department also helps to facilitate and run the students' newspaper.
