The Valley Music Project
The Valley Music Project draws talented young people from the New Apostolic Church's congregations in the Valley and is the initiative of Bridge House School's Music Department. The New Apostolic Church has twelve congregations in close proximity to Bridge House School. The congregations are made up of 1 900 members. Music plays a very important part in the Church's worship. The NAC reaches out to young people through its music and apart from worship, uses music to promote self confidence, a positive self image and a healthy lifestyle. This philosophy is close to Bridge House's heart.
Ex-Bridge House Music teacher, Marian Clift, was amazed at the musical talent displayed by children from the NAC, particularly as none of them had received any formal music tuition. She recognised the need for this talent to be nurtured and the Valley Music Project was started. It began with twenty three pupils learning to play the recorder, sixteen of whom have progressed to the fife and flute under the tutelage of Bridge House Music Teachers.
With the funding received from various benefactors, the Project has grown to accommodate 50 children who learn to play the violin, recorder and flute every Friday afternoon at the school. The children's transport to the school is paid for and they are given a substantial snack when they arrive which enables them to concentrate better.
Bridge House is pleased to be involved in the Music Project and we hope that this project will grow and eventually our dream of developing a Music Centre to serve the whole community, to nurture and develop the talent of all the youth in our Valley and to build bridges between us, will come true.
Sandwich Day
Every Tuesday, pupils from both Prep and College, bring bread and spreads to school and make sandwiches during their homeroom period. Â These sandwiches are taken to the Wemmershoek Primary School to distribute to the children there. Â Many of these children come to school hungry and are grateful for the one day a week when they have some food for the day.
Reading Programme
Twice a week pupils from Bridge House visit Dalubuhle School in Franschhoek to assist with a reading programme. Â The Bridge House pupils enjoy the interaction with these young children as much as the pupils from Dalubuhle enjoy the experience of reading together older pupils do.
Interact Club and President's Award
Various community service projects are undertaken by individual pupils working towards their President's Awards and the Interact Club also undertake service projects such as the recent refurbishment of a classroom at Weseind Primary School in Franschhoek.
