English

We focus on developing independent thinkers and keen, critical readers who are aware of the power and beauty of language. Time is spent on the process of writing, not only the product. A wide variety of genres is explored. We favour a literature-based approach which includes the study of films. Our oral programme aims to encourage confident, effective speakers.
Pupils participate in the English Olympiad (two pupils have been placed in the top 50 in the country in recent years), the Franschhoek Literary Festival and the SACEE Language Challenge, amongst others. We work closely with the Art and Drama departments in developing creative projects where children can express themselves through a number of different media. The Department also helps to facilitate and run the students' newspaper and the debating society.
As of July 2011, we offer Advanced Programme English to a small group of students.
We maintain a high standard of academic excellence in the Matric exams in which a number of our students have been placed in the top 1% in the country.
