Afrikaans
Standards set by the new curriculum are very high and demand that pupils are fully bilingual in English and their first additional language by the time they write their final exam for the FET phase in Grade 12. At Bridge House we offer Afrikaans as a first additional language.
We expect our students to read extensively in Afrikaans. Apart from the prescribed setworks on poetry and literature, they will be required to read, view and comment on magazine, internet and newspaper articles as well as films.
Pupils in Grade 8 and 9 write one paper of two hours while those in Grade 10 to 12 write two papers of two and a half hours each. the first paper is exclusively a reading paper which tests their comprehension and reading skills and their ability to evaluate critically and respond to a wide range of texts. The second paper is a writing paper which tests pupils' ability to write and present using formats and conventions appropriate to diverse contexts.
At Bridge House we demand intense focus and commitment from our pupils in the Afrikaans classroom. Our philosophy is, "What you put in, you will get out". Students with a positive approach will find it a very rewarding subject and those who make the effort will reap the benefit.
