Subject Choices

Subject Choices in Grades 8 and 9

In Grades 8 and 9 pupils are required to study all the Learning Areas which are assessed at the General Education and Training Level (GETC) which all pupils in South African schools complete at the end of Grade 9.

These learning areas are: Languages and Literacy (English and Afrikaans), Mathematical Literacy (Mathematics), Human and Social Science (Geography and History), Economic and Management Sciences (Business Economics and Accounting), Natural Sciences (Biology and Physical Science), Arts & Culture (Art, Drama and Music), Life Orientation, Technology.

At Bridge House, Grades 8 and 9 are assessed in formal examinations, in addition to the Continuous Assessment and results are reflected on reports, both as a percentage and as a level of achievement.

In Grade 10 students enter the FET phase culminating in the National Senior Certificate exam set by the IEB.

Subject Choices for Grades 10, 11 and 12 in 2011.

English, Afrikaans First Additional Language, Maths or Maths Literacy and Life Orientation are compulsory subjects.

Pupils may choose

  • Physical Science or Geography or Drama or Foreign language French or German;
  • Economics or Art or Life Science (Biology);
  • Accounting or History or Information Technology or CAT or Geography
  • Advanced programme Mathematics is by arrangement.
  • Music as a subject is by arrangement with the Music Department. Individual tuition, which is a component of this course, is extra and is charged to parents' accounts.

Second Additional Languages, French and German, are offered as a choice in the timetable.  Other languages can be taken privately with tutors but parents are responsible for these arrangements.
